Dame Judy Dench revealed she accidentally made a nude FaceTime call to wish a friend a happy birthday, not knowing how the Apple video call app worked.
During an appearance on The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2 on Wednesday, the 88-year-old actor shared the story of how she bared all on the birthday call after her daughter, Finty Williams, asked her to reach out to a fellow actor.
Fint rang me one morning and said, It’s Chris Logan’s birthday and he’s having a walk with Ben Whishaw in Regent’s Park… please wish him happy birthday’, Dench recalled, referring to two actors.
“I picked up my phone, and I said, Chris, happy, happy … and I just saw these two people turn and [make shocked faces],” Dench said.
“Well, it was FaceTiming them,” she said. “I dont know about FaceTime. Poor Chris.”
What a birthday message, Ball joked. You cant top that, though, can you?”
Dench last month released her new book, Shakespeare: The Man Who Pays The Rent, with co-author Brendan OHea, who joined her on the radio show.
She shared that a costume collector had written to tell her they had a tunic worn by her late husband, actor Michael Williams, in When Thou Art King, in which he played Henry V. The pair married in 1971, and Williams died from lung cancer in 2001.
“It was the first thing I’d ever seen Mikey in, long before we were married,” Dench said. “So I said, How fantastic, and she sent it to me.
Later, Dench realized her late brother, Jeffery Dench, was part of the same production, and his wife had designed the tunic worn by Williams.
“There was a wonderful moment when Fint opened this box and saw her dad’s costume, Dench said.
The connection there,” OHea said. “Fint was in tears, Sammy [Dench’s grandson] was in tears and Judi was so emotional. It was just a beautiful moment, to see the whole family reunited, and also reunited through Shakespeare.”
