Met Gala veteran Sarah Jessica Parker says she skipped the star-studded dinner because she literally couldn’t sit in her dress.
The And Just Like That… star, 59, made her 12th appearance at the Costume Institute’s annual fundraiser at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City on Monday night.
The actress shared a photo on Instagram that showed her riding to the event in a van that had room enough for her to stand, because she couldn’t sit in the sculptural corset gown from designer Richard Quinn. She accessorized the gown with a Philip Treacy fascinator, a Benedetta Bruzziches Lumière bag, embellished tights and pumps, and an array of jewelry.
In an interview on Today with Hoda and Jenna on Tuesday, Parker was asked whether there was music and dinner at the event.
There is. I couldnt sit. Literally couldnt sit, Parker said.
You didn’t stay for dinner? host Hoda Kotb asked.
I didn’t, Parker said. She told Kotb and co-host Jenna Bush Hager that she had to leave early anyway because she had things to do Tuesday morning.
But despite skipping dinner and a performance by Ariana Grande, Parker said she had a really lovely opportunity to be among the first to view the Costume Institute’s new exhibition, Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion. The exhibit features historic garments too fragile to be worn by humans or mannequins displayed in innovative ways, as well as garments displayed within multi-sensory experiences that allow visitors to touch, smell and even hear the clothing.
That exhibit this year at the Costume Institute … it is the most unforgettable, glorious exhibition I have ever seen, Parker said.
It is my favorite. [Met curator Andrew Bolton] is incredible and his entire staff, and they are knowledgeable and inspired and wise and deeply curious about fabric, material, style, silhouettes — everything! But this particular exhibit I think is one of the greatest ever, Parker said.
Hager agreed the exhibit is incredible.
Can you believe it? Just the headpieces, the millinery work. Ive never seen so many shades of yellow in my entire life. There are tiny little pieces that are like, cocktail aprons. Its incredible, Parker said.
