Tim Burton announced Thursday that filming for Beetlejuice 2 has finally wrapped, after the production was put on hold during the SAG-AFTRA strike.
The 65-year-old director shared an Instagram photo on Thursday that showed him sitting in a chair on the set. Just finished shooting Beetlejuice. Thank you to everyone involved, he wrote.
Production for the long-awaited sequel to 1988’s Beetlejuice began in May, and was 99 percent done when Hollywood actors went on strike in July, Burton told The Independent in a September interview.
I feel grateful we got what we got,” Burton told the outlet. “Literally, it was a day and a half [left to finish]. We know what we have to do.
On this last one, ‘Beetlejuice 2’, I really enjoyed it, he said of the new movie. I tried to strip everything and go back to the basics of working with good people and actors and puppets. It was kind of like going back to why I liked making movies.”
The beloved original starred Michael Keaton in the titular role, and the 72-year-old is returning for the sequel. Winona Ryder is also returning in the role of Lydia Deetz, along with Catherine O’Hara as Delia Deetz. Jenna Ortega is joining the cast as Lydia Deetz’s daughter.
Beetlejuice 2 is scheduled to release in theaters on Sept. 6, 2024.
