Millie Bobby Brown may have been UNICEF’s youngest Goodwill Ambassador at age 14, but the now-19-year-old Stranger Things star says she didn’t realize she was a feminist until a psychic told her she was.
In her Women of the Year cover story published in Glamour UK, Bobby said her session with a psychic left her with questions. She remembered searching How do I know if I’m a feminist? on the internet and reading books and articles to learn more about the idea of feminism.
She ultimately found that feminism is about opportunity, she told the magazine.
The Enola Holmes star said she founded her production company PCMA to provide opportunities to women and girls, and her upcoming film Damsel is no exception. The theme is feminism, she said.
She also shared how her relationship with fiancé Jake Bongiovi, son of rocker Jon Bon Jovi, helped her embrace her strength as a woman.
I think I was so afraid to be a strong woman in a relationship, she said. When I met Jake, I just felt I could be loud. He embraced that and encouraged that. And I fell in love with myself while being with him.
Parts of herself that she once hated became the parts she loved about herself, she said.
Those are things that I love about myself now. He was a really big, huge part of me loving myself and becoming a woman, Brown said. It was like, ‘Wow, I really love this person because he allows me to love myself.’
And part of becoming a woman is leaving childish things behind, like the Stranger Things role that launched her to stardom when she was just 11 years old. Although the Netflix hit gave her the tools and the resources to be a better actor, it prevented her from pursuing projects she was passionate about.
I’m ready to say, ‘Thank you, and goodbye,’ Brown said.
