An ad for an image-generating artificial intelligence app that used Scarlett Johansson’s image and likeness without her permission has disappeared from the internet after the actress took legal action.
The ad for the Lisa AI: 90s Yearbook & Avatar app allegedly began with real behind-the-scenes footage of Johansson filming Marvels “Black Widow, according to Variety. The ad then shifted to an AI-generated version of Johansson endorsing the app.
The ad’s fine print read: Images produced by Lisa AI. It has nothing to do with this person.”
The ad was posted on X, formerly Twitter, and was spotted Saturday. Johansson is not a spokesperson for the app, and took legal action, Variety reported.
“We do not take these things lightly. Per our usual course of action in these circumstances, we will deal with it with all legal remedies that we will have,” Johansson’s attorney, Kevin Yorn, said in a statement
There are multiple Lisa AI apps, and Lisa AI is just one of many AI-powered image generation apps. It allows users to create avatars, wallpapers, and other forms of AI art in a variety of styles.
Johansson is just the latest celebrity to address advertising using her likeness without permission.
Last month, Tom Hanks warned fans not to be fooled by a video using an AI-generated version of him to promote a dental plan.
“BEWARE!! Theres a video out there promoting some dental plan with an AI version of me. I have nothing to do with it,” Hanks captioned an image of the ad on Instagram.
The use of artificial intelligence in Hollywood is one of the sticking points for actors who have been on strike since July 14. SAG-AFTRA, the actors’ union, said AI was among the issues discussed with studios over the weekend, and in an update Monday, said they remain far apart on key issues.
