Heading into dry January, former Good Morning America anchor T.J. Holmes admitted Thursday he was easily consuming 18 drinks per day while he spent 2023 unemployed.
Holmes and GMA3: What You Need to Know co-anchor Amy Robach lost their jobs in late 2022 after being romantically linked while they were still married to their former spouses.
Speaking on their new iHeartRadio Amy and T.J. Podcast on Thursday, the couple revealed they were appalled by how much they drank in 2023, a year they described as their version of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I didnt have a job to go to and I was away from a lot of friends and family. We were laying low. So what did I do? I drank a lot,” Robach, 50, revealed. “A lot more than I ever have. I dont think I have ever gone a full year where I drink every single day and that was 2023 for me.”
Robach said she wasn’t getting fully drunk every day, but keeping a buzz going all day. She said she was consuming over 30 drinks per week. Holmes, 46, admitted he could “easily go through 18 drinks” a day.
The pair described taking runs to fun, running several miles only to end at a bar.
“Now we will run at 8 or 9 in the morning …. and I come back and we have a beer,” Holmes said. The “runs to fun” meant he was often already “two drinks in” by lunchtime.
Holmes admitted he “needs to reexamine [his] relationship with alcohol. In December alone, the pair said they spent $2,869 on alcohol.
Holmes said he has done alcohol-free dry January in the past, but this is Robach’s first time doing the challenge, and she’s glad to have Homes doing it by her side.
“I dont know that I would have felt comfortable or — honestly this may sound crazy — but I dont know if I would have felt brave enough or courageous enough to say, I am 100 percent going cold turkey this month, if you hadnt said, Im doing it and we can do it together’, Robach said.
