Dancer and choreographer Derek Hough said his wife Hayley Erbert was undergoing surgery Wednesday to replace a piece of her skull that was removed during an emergency craniectomy on Dec. 6.
The news comes after the Dancing With The Stars judge, 38, said Friday it could be up to a few weeks before the followup surgery to “restore the skull to its natural shape and protect the brain from injury. He shared the update alongside a photo of Erbert wearing a protective helmet during a walk on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
Erbert, a star dancer on their Derek Hough: Symphony Of Dance tour, was rushed into emergency surgery after falling ill after their performance in Washington on Dec. 6. She was diagnosed with a cranial hematoma, when blood fills the skull, due to a burst blood vessel, Hough said.
On Friday, Hough said Erbert’s “recovery process has been nothing short of a miracle,” but that she still has a ways to go.
In a post on his Instagram Stories early Wednesday, he said she would be undergoing a procedure that morning to replace a large portion of her skull.
“I strongly believe all the prayers that have been sent with the intention and love of Hayleys recovery has helped so much. I cant thank you all enough, Hough wrote. “Please keep her in your prayers as I believe the collective energy helped her through these past few weeks. We love you we thank you.”
The Emmy-winning dancer and choreographer married Erbert, 27, on Aug. 26, about a month before their tour kicked off. Erbert rose to fame while still in high school when she made it to the top three women on Season 10 of So You Think You Can Dance.
The Derek Hough: Symphony of Dance tour has been postponed, and ticketholders can be refunded, or their tickets will be honored for a new date once the tour is rescheduled.
