Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is set to return to IMAX screens for an encore run after earning nearly $950 million at the global box office.
The one-week limited engagement will begin on Friday, Nov. 3, at IMAX screens worldwide, including six of its 70mm screens: AMC CityWalk Stadium 19 in Hollywood, Calif.; AMC Irvine Spectrum in Irvine, Calif.; AMC Lincoln Square in New York City; AMC Metreon 16 in San Francisco; BFI London in the United Kingdom; and Melbourne Museum in Australia.
The World War II biopic starring Cillian Murphy as the titular Manhattan Project nuclear physicist was originally released on the same day as Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, and likely benefited from the Barbenheimer pop culture phenomenon.
Oppenheimer earned around $946 million overall at the global box office, making it Nolan’s third highest-grossing film behind The Dark Knight and The Dark Night Rises, which both topped $1 billion. The film was the third highest-grossing release of the year, and the second highest-grossing R-rated film ever.
Counting only IMAX screens, Oppenheimer earned $183 million, making it the fourth highest-grossing IMAX release ever. The film propelled IMAX to its highest-grossing summer ever in the U.S., China, and more than 50 other countries.
IMAX last week reported its second highest-grossing quarter of all time at the global box office, led by Oppenheimer with significant contributions from Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1 and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
Oppenheimer is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. The 3-hour movie also stars Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett and Kenneth Branagh.
