Ewan McGregor’s daughter Clara revealed it was uncomfortable when her high school class had to watch his 1997 film The Pillow Book, which features full-frontal nudity.
Clara McGregor, 28, and her father, 52, appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live to promote their new film Bleeding Love, and shared the memorable experience of seeing her father naked alongside her entire class.
When I was a senior in high school I took a gender studies class, Clara said. My teacher came up to me near the end of the semester and was like, ‘Listen, there’s a movie that I usually teach, it’s part of the curriculum, your dad is in it. There is some nudity so I wanted to run it by you before we watched it in class.’
As she began the anecdote, Ewan McGregor covered his face with his hand in embarrassment.
And I said it was fine. I didn’t really think much of it. And so we watched the movie called ‘The Pillow Book’, which is a brilliant film, she said. But watching that movie at 17 with your entire high school class, it’s more like they’re watching me watch that film.
Kimmel interrupted to ask whether her father appeared unclothed, and he replied, a lot.
Full-frontally unclothed, the whole time, Clara said.
McGregor clarified that Clara’s teacher had also emailed him ahead of time, to ask his permission to play the movie in class.
I went, ‘Look, I wouldn’t want to be the reason you don’t show that movie to your kids because it’s a beautiful movie,’ McGregor said. But I said, ‘You have to guarantee that the kids are mature enough not to make fun of Clara or make her feel bad about it.’
Clara said they were mature enough, but that it was uncomfortable. I think they also probably felt a little uncomfortable.
Clara is the oldest of Ewan McGregor’s five children, and they star together in Bleeding Love, which follows a father and daughter on a road trip to Santa Fe, N.M., where they’re forced to confront the issues of their past that have led to their frail relationship.
The film was written by Ruby Caster based on a story conceived by Clara alongside Caster and Vera Bulder.
“There was something special about [Ewan] being a part of a film that I was also producing and had put together,” Clara said.
“I’d always admired my dad as an actor and getting to act with him showed me how good he is at what he does, she said.
Bleeding Love hits theaters Feb. 16.
