Just hours after Shakira announced a pop-up concert on social media, around 40,000 fans gathered in New York City’s times Square to see her on Tuesday evening.
The columbian singer, 47, performed on the TSX Stage in Times Square to celebrate the release of her first new album in seven years, “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran” (Women No Longer Cry), which came out on Friday.
An electronic billboard counted down to the free show as fans gathered, and at around 7:30 p.m., the jumbotron’s doors opened as Shakira opened the show with her hit Hips Don’t Lie.
“Hola New York! Oh my God, this is amazing, absolutely insane,” the three-time Grammy winner told the crowd. Thank you so much for all the love that youve been giving me this week during the release of my new album ‘Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran’. And thank you, thank you, thank you for showing up.”
The 14-time Latin Grammy winner went on to perform “Te Felicito”, “TQM”, “Cómo Dónde y Cuándo” and “Puntería,” closing the show with her hit “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53.”
Shakira appeared the night before on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where she discussed her 2022 split from soccer star Gerard Piqué, with whom she shares two sons, and why it took so long for her to release a new album.
“The husband was dragging me down. Now Im free. Now I can actually work, she said.
Fallon praised the success of her new album, noting that in the three days since its release, “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran” had become the most-streamed album of 2024, already.
It was certified seven times platinum, already!” Fallon marveled.
“I was writing, I felt at times, with a knife between my teeth … I was trying to rebuild myself, and music was the glue, Shakira said. I was transforming pain and anger and frustration into creativity and productivity and straight and resilience.”
