Beyoncé previously dedicated her album Renaissance to another late family member she called uncle Johnny. Although Tina Knowles has described Johnny as being like a brother to her, he was in fact her sister’s son, and Beyoncé’s cousin. He died when the Grammy winner was just 17, due to complications related to HIV.
A big thank you to my Uncle Johnny, Beyoncé wrote on her website when she released the album. He was my godmother and the first person to expose me to a lot of the music and culture that serve as inspiration for this album.
A lyric in the Renaissance track Heated says, Uncle Johnny made my dress.
Thank you to all of the pioneers who originate culture, to all of the fallen angels whose contributions have gone unrecognized for far too long. This is a celebration for you, Beyoncé wrote.
