A Peaky Blinders movie is set to begin shooting later this year, according to creator Steven Knight, and Cillian Murphy will definitely return in the role of Tommy Shelby.
Knight, the creator of the Peaky Blinders TV series, shared the news with Birmingham World at the premiere of The Town, his new drama for the BBC.
“He definitely is returning for it, Knight said of Murphy’s participation in the project. Were shooting it in September just down the road in Digbeth.
Murphy starred as war hero-turned-gang leader Tommy Shelby, and the series also featured Tom Hardy, Helen McCrory, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Natasha O’Keefe, among others. Set in 1919, the series follows the criminal underworld of Britain following World War One.
Despite being fresh off his Oscar win for Oppenheimer, Murphy has long indicated he is open to returning to the world of Peaky Blinders.
During an episode of Varietys Actors on Actors last year, fellow Barbenheimer star and self-described Peaky Blinders superfan Margot Robbie asked Murphy to bring back Tommy Shelby for a spinoff movie.
“I mean, Im open to the idea, Murphy said. Ive always thought that if theres more story to tell.”
