A Brazilian woman who sent thousands of cards to Harry Styles pleaded guilty to stalking the pop star and was sentenced to 14 weeks in jail, officials said Friday.
Myra Carvalho, 35, appeared at Harrow crown court sitting at Hendon magistrates court in London and pleaded guilty on Tuesday to a charge of stalking involving serious alarm or distress. She was sentenced to 14 weeks in prison and hit with a 10-year restraining order barring her from contacting Styles directly or indirectly or attending any event where he performs.
She was also told never to enter an area of northwest London and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of around $166.
Carvalho traveled to the U.K in December, unbeknownst to her family, and stayed at a hostel in southwest London.
Prosecutors said Carvalho sent the 30-year-old singer handwritten letters along with some 8,000 cards, including wedding cards, in less than a month. Two of the cards were hand-delivered to Styles’ address.
This wasn’t the former One Direction singer’s first brush with taking legal action against a stalker.
In 2019, Styles testified against 26-year-old Pablo Tarazaga-Orero, who had camped outside his London home for months. At first, Styles felt bad for the homeless man, and offered him money for food or a hotel. But in the weeks that followed, Styles testified that Tarazaga-Orero continued camping outside his home, and regularly appeared at his local pub within minutes of his own arrival.
“Until that point, I never felt unsafe or uneasy in my own home, Styles testified. He said he had to hire a night guard, and begin locking his bedroom door.
