A second horror film starring Mickey Mouse has been announced, after the earliest version of the Disney character featured in Steamboat Willie entered the public domain this week.
Director-producer Steven LaMorte and the producers of Terrifier 2 announced the project on Tuesday, just a day after a trailer was released for Mickey’s Mouse Trap, another horror project from Jamie Bailey.
LaMorte’s take will be a horror comedy that sees a late-night boat ride turn into a desperate fight for survival in New York City when a mischievous mouse becomes a monstrous reality. Can a motley crew survive a killer creature with a taste for tourists?
“Steamboat Willie has brought joy to generations, but beneath that cheerful exterior lies a potential for pure, unhinged terror, LaMorte said in a statement. I cant wait to unleash our twisted take on this beloved character to the world.”
In the newly released trailer for Mickey’s Mouse Trap, classic Steamboat Willie clips are cut together with new footage of a mouse-masked killer stalking patrons at an arcade.
According to the film’s logline, its Alexs 21st birthday, and shes stuck at the amusement arcade on a late shift so her friends decide to surprise her, but a masked killer dressed as Mickey Mouse decides to play a game of his own with them which she must survive.
A video game based on the character was also announced. Originally titled Infestation 88, the game’s name was changed to Infestation: Origins after complaints about the Nazi symbolism of the number 88.
The co-op game, too, is in the horror genre, with players taking on the role of exterminators treating sinister infestations caused by twisted versions of classic characters and urban legends.
