Will Smith took to Instagram on Sunday to post what many fans saw as a subtle response to his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s recent interviews in which she discussed the state of their marriage, and their seven-year separation.
The video clip shows Smith sleeping on board a boat zooming over the water as ringtones beep in the background.
Fun fact about me, a voiceover says, I can take a nap almost anywhere. The clip then shows Smith waking up, looking at the camera, and shaking his head as notifications continue pinging.
Notifications off, he captioned the video. Pinkett Smith commented on the post with a pair of laughing emojis.
The couple has been in the headlines over the last week as Pinkett Smith promotes her upcoming memoir, Worthy, which is available online and in stores on Oct. 17.
The book covers Pinkett Smith’s childhood, marriage, motherhood, and even her struggles with thoughts of suicide.
The actress revealed last week that the couple had already been separated for six years before the 2022 Academy Awards, where Smith slapped host Chris Rock for cracking a joke about her baldness. She has previously discussed living with the condition alopecia.
The pair have long been open about the ups and downs of their marriage, more recently including her admitted romantic entanglement with singer August Alsina. It turns out the affair actually occurred while she was separated from Smith.
Despite the separation, the pair frequently appear together at events and on red carpets, along with their two children, Jaden, 25, and Willow, 22, and Will’s 30-year-old son Trey from a previous marriage.
Over the weekend, Smith issued a statement to the New York Times responding to his wife’s memoir.
“When youve been with someone for more than half of your life,” he wrote, “a sort of emotional blindness sets in, and you can all too easily lose your sensitivity to their hidden nuances and subtle beauties.”
In an interview with People last week, Pinkett Smith said they are still figuring it out, referring to their marriage, which began in 1997 when she was pregnant with Jaden.
Weve been doing some really heavy-duty work together. We just got deep love for each other and we are going to figure out what that looks like for us, she said.
During her appearance Monday on the podcast On Purpose with Jay Shetty, the host read a letter he said was from Smith.
I applaud and honor you. If I had read this book 30 years ago, I definitely wouldve hugged you more,” Shetty read from the letter. “Ill start now. Welcome to the authors club. I love you endlessly.
“Thats beautiful,” Pinkett Smith told Shetty. “Thats why I cant divorce that joker.”
