The gray pinstripe jumpsuit worn by Nicole Kidman for her iconic AMC advertisement is being auctioned off as part of Sothebys “Visions of America” series.
Fans fell in love with Kidman’s ad when it began airing ahead of films at AMC movie theaters more than a year ago. In it, the award-winning actress waxes poetic about the power of movies as she enters an empty, darkened theater and takes a seat.
The ad became such a pop-culture phenomenon that moviegoers began reciting her dialogue along with her, and even made T-shirts featuring the famous line, Somehow, heartbreak feels good in a place like this.” The ad even got the parody treatment on SNL.
The Grey Wool and Cashmere Crystal Pinstripe Jumpsuit Kidman wears in the ad was featured as Look 33 in the Michael Kors 40th Anniversary Fall/Winter 2021 Collection.
According to Sotheby’s the jumpsuit is expected to fetch an estimated $5,000 to $10,000 at auction.
The Visions of America series is a celebration of American craftsmanship and culture with objects from the 17th century to the present spanning three floors of gallery space at the auction house’s New York headquarters.
American fashion designer Thom Browne is the curatorial partner of Visions of America, and selected his favorite art and objects from the sales. His curated picks include several pieces of antique mahogany furniture and a portrait of George Washington by Charles Willson Peale, estimated at between $2 million and $3 million.
Exhibitions will be open to the public from Jan. 12–19, and the auction will run from Jan. 19–29.
